There are endless ways to make your holiday healthier – whether it’s seeing a city by bike or simply swimming laps – but have you ever considered taking a healthy holiday?
According to a new survey conducted by Travel Insurance Direct, wellness trips – ‘sweatcations’, if you will – are gaining momentum with Australian travellers, with a third of the study’s participants saying they intend taking a holiday with a health, fitness or wellbeing focus over the next 12 months.
And, from yoga against a backdrop of New Zealand’s fjords to Ayurvedic consultations in Bali’s mountains, consider this a primer to getaways that should be high up on your inspiration board, if that’s your cup of coconut water. (Sorry.)
Kamalaya, Koh Samui, Thailand
This estate has a range of wellness programs on offer, which focus on combating stress, burnouts and all-round health reboots, depending on your personal goals. Personal training, cooking classes and yoga are at your disposal here, too; in case your endurance takes a hit, with all that time you’ll want to be spending by the pool.
COMO Shambhala Estate, Bali
Always wondered about alternative therapies? This estate has its own Ayurvedic expert on site, as well as a nutritionist, for starters. Not to mention, detox plans, meditation sessions and, of course, infinity pools overlooking Ubud’s lush, verdant vistas. No Bintang singlets here.
Aro Ha Wellness Retreat, New Zealand
Located just outside Queenstown, in New Zealand’s – and we quote – “ethereal Southern Alps”, relaxing in this retreat, which offers interval training sessions, yoga and hikes against a backdrop of Glenorchy’s fjords, will come easy. As for the menu? It’s all vegetarian… which begs only one question: where do we sign up?
Coronado, San Diego, California
If you’re visiting California, rejuvenate in sunny San Diego (no Anchorman references, please) and make the trip out to Coronado Island. It’s a resort city packed with old-school Americana and the only mermaid fitness class in the world. (That we’re aware of.)
SHA Wellness Clinic, Spain
This Spanish sanctuary has Eastern therapies and a medi-spa on site, which you can pop in and out of between cooking classes, and all that macrobiotic feasting you’ll be doing. The WHO also said its location – Altea, in Alicante – boasts some of the best weather in the world… so, there’s also that.
Gaia Retreat & Spa, Byron Bay
There are few places that evoke a sense of calm in the same way Byron Bay does – and a trip to this iconic retreat really takes relaxation to the next level – even if you squeeze in one hilltop yoga session between all those sauna sweat sessions.
